The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC), supported by Eirigi, the Palestinian Right Institute & Irish Anti War Movement, will hold a peaceful protest at the Shamrock Rovers vs Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv game in Tallaght Stadium on Thursday July 15th. On July 1, 2010 the special police branch of the Indian state assassinated in cold blood, Azad, (Cherukuri Rajkumar) the spokesperson of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) having earlier forcefully abducted him and Hem Chandra Pandey, a freelance journalist accompanying him. Both were tortured and executed and their bodies dropped and left in a distant forest. AFAR would like to condemn yet again the keeping of wild animals in captivity for entertainment purposes. The 10 year old Penguin stolen from the Zoo and dumped in the City centre is yet another example of the dangers posed to wild animals by Zoos. Zoos are a remnant of bygone days and merely a continuation of the outdated Victorian menageries of the past. The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) today welcomed the move by Irish Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern to block a proposed European Commission data-sharing plan with Israel. If adopted the proposal would have given the green light to EU member states to allow the transfer to and storage of sensitive personal data on European citizens to Israel. read full story / add a comment

The Secret lives and deaths of 60,000 Irish hunt dogs? The Irish Hunters are so paranoid regarding the inspections related to the upcoming Dog Breeding Bill ,that we in the AOHS have decided to try and count the numbers of hounds that Hunts have and that are relevant to this legislation, these dogs would currently be residing in Irish hunt kennels. Having read the quote from Chairman of the HAI Gavin Duffy that ‘’60,000 hounds’’ resided here. He quoted this figure at a recent Navan HAI protest meeting a few months ago. We decided to gather the facts printed in the hunts own publications to verify this figure. read full story / add a comment

Despite a 150,000 petition collected by patients and their families and extensive lobbying including a facebook campaign, government TDs would not accept amendments from Labour and FG which would have protected St Luke's and retained it as a public cancer hospital. Despite being on record as supporting the campaign to save St Luke's, John Gormley did not even appear at the Dail debate while constituency collegues Ruairi Quinn and Lucinda Creighton spoke up for St Luke's. According to reports received by “Human Rights and Democracy activists of Iran Roya Samadi, daughter-in-law of Mansour Osanloo, president of the board of directors of the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company, was kidnapped and savagely tortured by three agents of Intelligence Ministry. On Wednesday 2nd of Tir (June 23, 2010) Ms. Samadi, while going home from work around 5:30PM, was attacked by three men as soon as she got off the metro train in Karaj. The agents grabbed her by hair and while pulling her by her hair were kicking and punching her. All of this in broad day light in front of all other shocked commuters. Ms. Samadi while crying for help kept repeating that she's Mr. Osanloo's daughter-in-law. The agents put a tape over her mouth as to silence her pleas, and kidnapped her to an undisclosed location. read full story / add a comment

On Sunday June 27 the President of Republican Sinn Féin Des Dalton and its Patron Ruairí Ó Brádaigh visited Maghaberry prison. Despite assurances by the Northern Ireland Prison Service the Duty Governor failed to meet Des Dalton and Ruairí Ó Brádaigh. However they did meet with the OC of the Republican prisoners. The purpose of the proposed meeting with the Duty Governor was to put forward the 5 demands of the Republican prisoners for political status as well as to highlight the internment of veteran Republican and political hostage Martin Corey. Here is a list of imprisoned Iranian Trade Unionists. In Iran Free Trade Unions are illegal and workers who attempt to organise to defend their conditions are imprisoned flogged and murdered. You can take steps to to help these workers as the one thing the Mullahs fear is publicity. Copy the list into an email and send it to the Iranian Embassy demanding that these workers be released and their safety guaranteed.
